Howard’s Beach in Cape May was a lovely place to go in September. The ocean had warmed up, the sand had cooled down, and the far less crowded beach still had enough activity going on for artists to paint. Eight of us rented a cottage and swam at this beach almost every day after painting. The rocks are the jetty just below Howard’s Beach – I thought it was fun to call this Howard’s Beach oil painting – Raggedy Ann on the Rocks. This tiny 5″ x 7″ transparent watercolor of sailboats at Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, Canada I painted en plein air from the little bridge near Ian’s farm where my daughter and I vacationed one year. We would gather ripe wild berries on our way down to the bridge and eat them fresh and juicy at our next meal. I want to be there – now, under the cerulean sky with the boats, the water, the sunlit shops, and the friendly people. This transparent watercolor is a “half sheet” (15″ x 22″) and is still in the Collection of the Artist. I’m a gull watcher. And a gull painter. One of my favorites was of the seagulls at Baby Beach in Aruba. This transparent watercolor is of gulls swirling around in front of my son’s third floor deck on the dune. I donated it through Healing Art Works to The Cancer Center of Paoli Hospital in Pennsylvania. California Coast Above Pigeon Point Light is a large 3′ x 4′ oil on canvas that I created in my Pennsylvania studio. My reference was a small watercolor sketch I had painted on location en plein air. This oil painting is now in the home of a California Collector. This half sheet was created on location in about fifteen minutes. I had to work fast. In Aruba to paint with friend Terry, I somehow survived this island’s winds which never cease and caused this 15″ x 22″ half sheet of paper to flutter, flap and dry the transparent watercolors in seconds. Very difficult to keep a large wash going. Impossible to drop in any colors. But I love this painting and the memories that go with it. I wish I knew who purchased it – I was never told.
