Although the lotus blossoms were not in bloom, the egrets were there at this lovely pond outside of Virginia Beach. Two copperheads were sunning below us in the branches of a bush I did not paint. I didn’t paint the snakes either, but I did take their pictures! My original sketch of this wonderful barn was made in the summertime. The first painting, titled simply “Hope’s Barn” was small and sold immediately from the Gallery our Art League had in what is now Eagle Village in Strafford. But, wanting more drama, I decided to create a winter scene instead and after years of thinking about it, I painted this Ardrossan in Winter-Hope’s Barn. It is a half sheet (15” high x 22” wide) with an off-white mat in a 20” high x 27” wide frame. Ardrossan and Hope were the inspiration for The Philadephia Story with Katharine Hepburn and its remake High Society with Grace Kelly. Chanticleer Garden in Wayne is open to the public. We artists who live in the area have been so fortunate over the years to be invited to come and paint in the extensive and varied gardens of this large property. At the time this transparent watercolor was painted, the strips of annuals was called “the cutting garden.” The path between these blooming strips had fabulous arches with sweet-smelling honeysuckle climbing all over them. I left the arches out of this painting – that will be an oil painting some day. This day, four of us were there painting – two of us at the “cutting garden,” the others on the terrace to capture that view. We spent the day there, meeting midday to lunch together, then back to our easels to finish for the day. This painting is currently in the Collection of the Artist but is available. That’s San Francisco fog creeping into the South Bay. I love the way California fog slips along the coast then spills up and over the mountains. I began Bay Fog en plein air and finished it in my California studio. This oil on canvas was later purchased by an East Coast Collector. Once again I had to work fast en plein air – this time I had to finish Low Tide at Littlefield Farm before the incoming tide reached the spot on Mansion Beach where I had set up my easel and transparent watercolors to paint this very early Block Island farm. The original painting was a “half sheet” (15″ x 22″) but I didn’t like all that sand, so I cut the bottom off. I don’t think it needs those extra inches of sand. What do you think? Because this is one of my favorite paintings, it was years before I could put it up for sale, and then it sold immediately here in Pennsylvania. Three of us from the French Creek Art Colony went up to paint in Maine, and this is my rendition of the lighthouse on Pemaquid Point not far from Damariscotta where we were staying. Terry was behind me painting almost the same view. Maggie was off to our left, painting rocks. As soon as I finished this transparent watercolor of the lighthouse, I painted Maggie painting.
