Farm Nestled in Snowy Hills

March in New Hampshire is breathtakingly beautiful.  I could not wait to get back to our cozy cabin to spread out in front of a blazing fire with my little travel set of watercolors and block of cold press paper to paint the cobalt blue shadows I saw on the snow. Two Boys Two Kites

This was my first watercolor.  Eight of us had rented a cottage in Cape May and on our first day out, someone said, “Let’s eat!”  The other painters quickly packed up their watercolors, piled into their cars and went off safari style in search of food.  I, the only oil painter, struggled with rags, turpentine and wet canvases, and by the time I was packed up and in my car, they were nowhere in sight.  I went back to the cottage by myself to await the magic hour of four in the afternoon when we had arranged to meet, no matter where we had painted that day, at the little shop that sold homemade ice cream.   That night, Phil gave me a half sheet of cold press watercolor paper (15″ x 22″), three watercolor sable brushes of various sizes, a huge Hake brush, and a palette filled with incredible, brilliant colors.  Two Boys Two Kites was created the next day.  For years we painted in Cape May, and every day that we painted, we met at 4 o’clock for ice-cream. Winter Thaw

It was summer when I sketched this cluster of farm buildings.  But at that time so much green seemed boring, and I wanted color and contrast.  So the summer sketch became a winter watercolor.  White roofs against dark evergreen trees give contrast and for color I made the barns red and the thawing fields orange. Beach Trunks

This half sheet was created on location in about fifteen minutes. I had to work fast.  In Aruba to paint with friend Terry, I somehow survived this island’s winds which never cease and caused this 15″ x 22″ half sheet of paper to flutter, flap and dry the transparent watercolors in seconds. Very difficult to keep a large wash going. Impossible to drop in any colors.  But I love this painting and the memories that go with it. I wish I knew who purchased it – I was never told. Poppies and Pinks

Poppies and Pinks was painted in California while I stood at a window in my daughter’s house on her knoll overlooking San Francisco Bay.  My new Kolinsky brush from England held much more water than I was used to, and the transparent watercolors puddled and dripped all over the paper.   I just let them go. There is joy in painting so freely.    Only last year was I able finally to let this half sheet (15″ x 22″) framed painting go for sale, and it is now in the home of a Collector.   Share this page on:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Tumblr (Opens in new...

Fox in Winter

I painted this “Fox in Winter” for my grandson who loves foxes and began collecting at an early age.
