Marion Coffin designed Gibraltar Garden. As a child, Marion summered with her cousin Henry DuPont. She then studied Architectural Landscaping at Boston University while Henry was studying Horticulture at Harvard. After their graduations, it seemed destined that Henry would ask Marion to design gardens for the Duponts and she did – five gardens, one of which is Gibraltar Garden in Wilmington, DE. Marion also designed the Colonial Dames Garden on Latimer Street in Philadelphia, PA. Painting en plein air and peeking out from under my fluttering white umbrella, I used transparent watercolor on Arches 140 lb cold press block for “Gibraltar Garden – June White Roses.” Friends Beverly, Leigh and Maggie painted in oils on that fun windy day in Wilmington.
